Samegrelo is located in the gorges of of the rivers of Enguri, Tskhenistskali and along the coast of Kolkheti valley, foothills of the Caucasus Mountains and part of mountain ranges.
It includes a plain, mostly swampy soil, the hills and valleys of the hill. There is Colcheti National Reserve in Samegrelo. It includes Colchi wetlands, sea acuatoria and the lake Paliastomi. Peat layer depth in some places is above 12 meters. There are a lot of lakes in territory of the reserve. Among them the most distinguished is the Paliastomi Lake, which was thw gulf of the Balck Sea in the past. Colchis lowland vegetation of is very rich. The richness of endemic species define its unique.
Samegrelo Culture and Traditions
in the old days the most part of the legendary ancient kingdom of Colchis was located in the territory of Samegrelo. According to the Ancient Greek myth, the son of the God of the sun Helios, Aieti reigned in Colchis, who kept the Golden Fleece. The Greek hero Jason with 50 people came from Greece to Colchis Kingdom for gaining the Golden Fleece. Their ship was called “Argo” so the expedition participants were called Argonauts. Samegrelo with its history and tradition is a very interesting part. In fact history of Georgia starts with the history of Colchis, and for the part are common the ancient customs and traditions, which influence on Georgian and non-Georgian origin – our neighbors everyday life. There was a big interest towards the life style of Samegrelo. The father of history Herodote believed that the Colchis were descendants of Egyptians. Greek writers considered the Colchis as the successor of biblical Noah’s son Japheth, travelers and missionaries of later age have interesting data about Samegrelo. They had diffrent goals, but left us valuable information about the ethnography of Samegrelo. These people were: Arkanjelo Lamberti, Chardin, U.Murie, Borozdin, Zamp, Castel and others.
Climate -Samegrelo seaside climate is humid subtropical, there is hot summer and warm winter here. On the plains, the average temperature is + 13-19 C. To the north, with elevation of the mountains, the air temperature decreases.
Food in Samegrelo
traditional food is spicy and richly mixed with spices. The reason of it is that in the old days, according to a mild, subtropical climate malaria was a huge threat in Samegrelo and early residents of this region have discovered that large amounts of pepper consumption is an obstacle to the development of a terrible disease. Finally, the traditional spicy seasonings became an attribute of Mengrelian traditional causine.Mengrelian causine uses several types of seasonings, mostly in the form of sauces. Traditional dishes include Ghomi (boiled corn flour) together with Sulguni (a fatty cheese) and fried meat in a spicy sauce (such as adjika). Two special dish- Elarji and Satsivi are cooked at holidays and for meeting special guests. These dishes are considered as the distinguished dished of Mengrelian cuisine throughout Georgia. Georgia has more than 500 grape varieties, while 60 of them grow in Samegrelo. The most famous of them is Ojaleshi the type of grape from which is made the best wine; this is semi-sweet red wine that has a faint scent of wild roses and bright ruby color.
